Dr. Owen graduated from Columbia Medical School in 1994, and then completed a general surgical residency at Montefiore Medical Center in 1999. He then followed this with a Head & Neck surgery fellowship at Montefiore where he became chief of Head & Neck surgery in 2006. He earned a masters degree in clinical research from Albert Einstein school of medicine in 2004. He was recruited to Mt. Sinai medical center in 2009 to help start the Endocrine surgery program and fellowship there where sixteen endocrine surgery fellows have been trained as of 2026. The majority of Dr. Owen's practice includes thyroid and parathyroid surgery. He also continues to perform surgery for oral cavity and salivary cancers.
