About Dr. Kotwal

“To me, patient education is a two-way street, where the medical experts inform patients of evidence-based health measures, but at the same time learn from patients about their attitude, perceptions, and beliefs. This generates evidence-based shared-decision making for patient care.”

Anupam Kotwal, MBBS is an Associate Professor in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and sees patients through Nebraska Medicine at the Diabetes and Endocrinology Center and the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. He earned his medical degree at Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, India in 2011, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2016, and completed his endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in 2019. He later earned a Master of Science at the University of Nebraska Medical Center with a thesis on immune biomarkers in thyroid cancer. He performs neck ultrasonography and biopsies of thyroid nodules and neck lymph nodes for the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with thyroid cancer. His research identifies immune biomarkers for thyroid cancer prognosis and characterizes endocrine dysfunction caused by cancer immunotherapies, including work showing that thyroid dysfunction from immune checkpoint inhibitors is a biomarker for improved survival. He is a Great Plains IDeA-CTR Research Scholar, serves on the editorial boards of three journals and on national society committees, and is himself a thyroid cancer survivor.
